Anticancer properties of olive oil discovered

While scientists have identified that the oleocanthal compound found in EVOO causes cell death in cancer cells, they have been unable to provide an explanation for this phenomenon until recently.

In a recent study published in Molecular and Cellular Oncology, researchers discovered that the key to understanding the toxic effect of oleocantha in cancerous cells lies in its reaction with the lysosomes of the cell, where the cells store waste.

The oleocantha ruptures the cancer cell lysosomes causing cell death within an hour, while leaving un-cancerous cells unharmed.  This would suggest that the lysosomal membranes of cancerous cells are weaker than those of non-cancerous cells.

Because of oleocantha targets the damage directly to the cancer cells, it may prove a valid option for therapeutic cancer treatment.

It strongly promotes.

cardiovascular health

Olive oil is considered heart-healthy for (many) good reasons. In the frequently cited PREDIMED study, people who ate a Mediterranean-style diet that included 4+ tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil per day had a lower risk of developing cardiovascular disease, and their combined risk for heart attack, stroke, and death from heart disease was around a 30% lower than people who ate a low-fat diet. EVOO has also been linked to improved cholesterol levels and reduced blood pressure. Oleic acid (the most abundant MUFA in all olive oil grades) and various polyphenols are likely to thank, given their ability to reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, and modify cholesterol levels in the bloodstream.
